Are There NYS Exams in 7th and 8th Grade?

Yes.

7th grade students will take NYS Exams in the following subject areas:

1.      ELA (English and Language Arts)

2.      Math

8th grade students will take NYS Exams in the following subject areas:

1.      ELA (English and Language Arts)

2.      Math

3.      Science (Lab and Written)

4.      Social Studies

5.      Foreign Language Proficiency

Is a Foreign Language Required?

Yes.

NYS requires that all students in 7th and 8th grade take a foreign language. The only exception is that the Committee on Special Education (CSE) may exempt some special education students from taking a foreign language based on their disability.

What Is the Grading / Promotion Policy?

  • A final average of 65 is needed in each class to pass for the year. This is determined by averaging all four marking period grades, plus the final exam grade, giving the students a total of five grades in each class of equal weight.

  • Students may repeat up to 2 classes in Summer School, if they do not pass during the school year. In order to attend Summer School, students must have at least a 55 average in the class(es) in question. The final average is then determined by averaging the final grade from the school year with the grade from summer school. Admission to Summer School is also dependent on an 80% attendance rate in the class(es) in question during the school year. Students may not miss more than 2 days of Summer School.

  • In order to be promoted to 8th grade students must pass all of their core classes (Math, Science, Social Studies, and English). We do have students with split schedules (7th / 8th / 9th grade classes). A student’s grade level is determined by the lowest grade level of their core classes. Please see Mr. Hammer with how this might affect your child and their possible graduation year.

What Extracurricular Activities Can My Child Participate In?
